Electronic irritations

Dependence on databases, data entry, and online aids snuck up on me. So far today I've had trouble with this website and the dumb graphics used to separate men from Skynet when doing something online that can be abused by bots. Usually it takes at least three attempts to get the thing right. passwords are not too much of a problem because I use something familiar. My life is not a spy novel. But the sixteen or more digit serial numbers used to activate programs usually trip me up. These are irritations though, not hurdles or roadblocks. I have one potential crack in the sidewalk right now.

Delta Dental is the contractee for military retiree dental insurance. I have had this insurance for several years and, being a dentist, use it. You've heard the jingle if you're my age; "Brush your teeth with C++++++ and see your dentist twice a year." Not bad advice. But I have an appointment for the dreaded root canal today. The time escaped me and I called. TheNiceLady (they usually are pleasant to old guys; if not find someone else to do business with) said that the carrier had my birthday wrong and that the office couldn't verify benefits. Why do they have it wrong? I have used the insurance for a while. Did a cosmic ray zap my data AND THE BACKUP? And most importantly, how much trouble is it going to be to get someone on the phone and get them to believe me before 11:15. So far one phone call told me that they were not open until 6:30 AM PDT. Now there's a convenience for 2/3rds of the country!

Tune in tomorrow to find out how the insurance thingie turned out-- that is if I'm not in too much pain from the dreaded root canal.
